Socks and oddments of yarn

Small projects are a wonderful way to finish using all your ends of yarns hanging around the knitting basket or basket'ssss in my case. Hats, booties, mitts etc, using oddments can give a stripe effect due to the shade of each yarn. You can also hand dye the finished knitwear solid Black and you will never know that the yarns were from different batches. Use a good quality dye such as http://www.wcushing.com/index.html  I have ooodles of oddments and im sure i will never get through using them all up. (OOO' sounds like a giveaway) So far i have counted 5 baskets with ends, some weigh upto 400 grams each. They are way too special to put in the garbage after all they are 'Qiviut' and we put in a lot of hours and effort into making these wonderful yarns, i'm sure some savy knitter would get hours of pleasure out of  these yarns !
The socks above are knit with 50% qiviut/merino and the contrast is 100% buffalo/bison from oddments. Our 2 ply knit double makes for a heavier knitwear and the yardage is Excellent.
This is the contents from just one basket. A mix of 100% qiviut, 50% qiviut-merino, 50% angora-qiviut, 100% Buffalo, natural and dyed yarns. Weighs about 400 grams, mostly 2 ply's. The yarns are all from different batches as you can see there is quite a difference in the shades between batches and blends.

What would you knit with these oddments ?

  1. I would knit a pair of legwarmers for DH, whose legs are almost always cold, and quite prone to cramping. If there were enough left, I would make my father a new sleeping hat. The last one I made is wool, and tends to feel itchy on his bald head.

  2. I would knit a toasty warm shawl or bedjacket for my mother, who is in a retirement home, and always seems to be cold even when the heat is blasting!

  4. I showed off my winnings from April at Knitting Group last night and everyone agreed that it was gorgeous. One woman said if she had just a bit of that yarn, she'd knit a little square and sew it to the inside of her jacket so she could pull it up to her face and rub once in a while. Then we all thought of knitting little softy swatches for kids affected by war or all of the natural disasters of late.

  5. I think mittens are a great use of oddments. Yours would be especially beautiful in Scandinavian designs!

  11. I have just discovered this fiber and i love it's softness. I am knitting my first qiviut scarf for my mother in a soft blue blend of qiviut/merino/silk, I have read that it is hypoallergenic, which is great for me as I see many beautiful scarves of wool but cannot wear them due to allergies. I look forward to knitting a scarf for myself.
